Martin Engelman was kunstschilder, tekenaar, graficus en typograaf.
Hij heeft opleidingen gevolgd aan de Amsterdamse Grafische School, de Middelbare Kunstnijverheidsschool (richting grafische technieken) in Maastricht en aan de kunstacademie van Sankt Gallen (typografie en compositie) in Zwitserland.
Martin Engelman heeft onder andere in Engeland, Frankrijk, Italië, de Verenigde Staten en Zwitserland gewerkt.
In Nederland werkte Engelman onder andere samen met Klaas Gubbels.
Zijn werk heeft zich ontwikkeld van surrealistisch tot abstract expressionistisch. Vanaf 1964 werkte hij uitsluitend autonoom.
Hij heeft gedoceerd aan verschillende academies in Duitsland en de Verenigde Staten
Zijn grafische werk was onder andere te zien op de Documenta III te Kassel. Het werk van Engelman bevindt zich in vele museale, bedrijfs en particuliere collecties. In Nederland zijn onder andere het Museum Boijmans van Beuningen en het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in bezit van zijn werk.

Martin Engelman was a painter, draftsman, graphic artist and typographer.
He studied at the Amsterdam Graphic School, the Secondary School of Arts and Crafts (graphic techniques) in Maastricht and at the art academy of Sankt Gallen (typography and composition) in Switzerland.
Martin Engelman worked in England, France, Italy, the United States and Switzerland, among other places.
