Jan Michels bezocht de Kunstnijverheidsschool in Haarlem en werd later leerling van Kees Verwey in diens atelier aan het Spaarne.
Jan was naast schilder ook graficus en illustrator/tekenaar.
Hij was lid van de kunstenaarsverenigingen “De Onafhankelijken” en de “Auckland Society of Arts”

Jan Michels attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Haarlem and later became a pupil of Kees Verwey in his studio on the Spaarne.
